The day of Tulsidas Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Goswami Tulsidas, who was a great Hindu saint and poet. He was also the acclaimed author of the great Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas. Tulsidas Jayanti is observed on the ‘Saptami’ (7th day) of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of moon) during the month of ‘Shravana’ in the traditional Hindu calendar. For those following the Gregorian calendar, this date falls in the month of August. Ramayana was written originally by Valmiki in Sanskrit and understanding it was only within the reach of scholars. However when Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas came into being, the greatness of the famous epic was popularized among the masses. It was written in Awadi, which is a dialect of Hindi. The day of Tulsidas Jayanti is therefore dedicated in honour of this great poet and his work.

Goswami Tulsidas not only did his own life through devotion to Ram, but tried to bind everyone with the ideals of Shri Ram. Goswami Tulsidas composed the story of Ram in the folk language, taking the Ramayana as the basis of Valmiki’s composition. Tulsi Jayanti is celebrated in the memory of Goswami Tulsidas all over India. The birth anniversary of Tulsidas is celebrated on the Saptami day of Shravan month. This year Goswami Tulsidas Jayanti will be celebrated on 4th August  2022. Goswami Tulsidas made the Ram Bhakti stream of saguna bhakti flow in such a way that that stream is flowing even today.

Significance of Tulsidas Jayanti:

Tulsidas was one of highly much-admired and knowledgeable poet of his times. Besides rendering incredible pieces of work he was also a saintly figure who was known for his good deeds. Moreover his life was noted for various miracles, one of which incorporates his meeting with Lord Hanuman and that was followed by divine darshan of Lord Ram. It is a popular belief that Saint Tulsidas was helped by Lord Hanuman while composing Ramcharitmanas. Some of the people even consider him to be an avatar of Sage Valmiki. The Ramcharitmanas written by Tulsidas gives more emphasis on Bhakti towards the Supreme Being. Out of the twelve outstanding works of Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas was the most famous.

Rituals during Tulsidas Jayanti:

The day of Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated with immense zeal and enthusiasm in remembrance of this great saint. This day gives every Hindu devotee a chance to express their gratitude towards the writer who popularized Ramayana in the whole of India. It was owing to the easy recitals and meaning of Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas that Lord Ram was known to a common man and also understood as a Supreme Being. On the auspicious day of Tulsidas Jayanti, various recitals of Sri Ramcharitmanas are held in temples of Lord Hanuman and Ram all over the country. On Tulsidas Jayanti several symposiums and seminars are held based on Tulsidas’s teachings. Also on this day there is also a ritual of feeding Brahmins in many places.
